Trump’s most recent warning to enforce an extra complete levy on products from China has been described as a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, per the Chinese government.
A Commerce Ministry spokesperson further commented that China could introduce its own unspecified “countermeasures” if the US President follows through on his warning, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade conflict.
On Friday, Trump hit back at Beijing’s move to tighten its rules for overseas sales of critical elements, charging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.
Additionally, he threatened to cancel a planned meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi, which was arranged for a conference in Seoul later this month.
Trump’s comments on Friday rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 dropping nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since earlier this year.
His comments reignited concerns of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.
Earlier this year, the respective governments had consented to eliminate high import duties on each other’s products, which had led to concerns of trade halting between the economic powers.
Consequently, United States levies on products from China incurring an added thirty percent tariff compared with the year’s onset, while American products entering the Chinese market incur a ten percent duty.
China’s latest remarks – released by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to press queries – mirrored terminology from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.
They criticised American limits on exports on chips and semi-conductors while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “routine measures” to safeguard national security and that of the global community.
Their representative said that for “many years”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of state security, misused overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” discriminatory practices against the Chinese nation.
“Turning to” import duty warnings is not the correct approach to interact with Beijing,” the spokesperson commented.
“Beijing’s stance” on a tariff war has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”
The previous week, China revealed it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on key elements and further resources vital for cutting-edge industry.
This was seen as a key move, as the nation handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in goods such as solar panels and mobile phones.
The recent comments from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by observers as a means of enhancing bargaining power in preparation for future trade talks.
It is unclear whether a summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a summit in Seoul in the coming weeks, will go ahead.
